Elizabeth Marie Pope - The Sherwood Ring (1958)

Pope was a Professor at Mills College where she specialised in Elizabethan England. I've read another book by her, The Perilous Gard, and because it was so brilliant I began searching for a copy of The Sherwood Ring. This is an amazing book. Pope uses the American War of Independence as the motivation for what happens in the future. History repeats itself in one family, told by the ghosts of those who first lived the drama.

The one thing that astonishes me is how young the characters are and how mature they are. When I look at teenagers I know now I realise nothing these characters do would be possible in our present age. It makes me sad that we stay immature so much longer, like we miss out on so much because we're not able to face it or explore it - maybe we've become so afraid of dying to the point where we no longer want to take chances and live.

This was a beautiful story. I'll be reading it again and again, just like I do with her other book. They make me wish she'd had time to write more.
